Virgin Media talks about the advertised broadband speeds
Virgin Media, the Cable broadband provider discloses about the significant difference in the actual broadband speeds received by the customers and advertised broadband speeds. The provider commented this when Ofcom was prepared to reveal the results of annual broadband speed test. The results suggested an increase in the average speeds and a huge gap between the speeds received by the customers and speeds advertised by the providers.
Virgin Media’s executive director of broadband, Jon James said that the reports comes as a good news to customers and it also proves that the DSL competitors are not providing advertised speeds of 20Mb broadband. He added that the DSL competitors are just offering 33% of their promised ‘up to 20Mb’ speed. Not a single DSL customer is getting 18Mb speed and only 2% are getting speeds more than 14Mb.
People need to be ensured that they are not being ripped off and that their confidence in super fast broadband is not damaged by the lack of precision in advertising. A review into the advertising ways of broadband is announced by the Advertising Standards Authority and they have asked for an immediate change.
Mr. Jon James said that about 90% of the advertised speeds are received by their customers. To deliver speeds of up to 10Mb, 20Mb and 50Mb broadband, the company make use of the fibre optic cables. By the end of this year the company will be launching a broadband package of 100Mb speed.
