UK Government forced to backtrack on broadband tax

0

UK Government plans to do away with the controversial Digital Economy Bill. The Government has decided to discard the launch of a 50p a month tax on every telephone line in the UK. If enforced, this law was expected to finance the investments in the UK broadband sector.

Meanwhile, as the government has been forced to abandon the intended overture of the broadband tax, it will be interesting to see who will finance the launch of future the UK broadband networks. The report says that even if the line was used for broadband or not, the UK government is expected to continue with plans to increase the controversial tax by £170 million a year.

However, the Digital Economy Bill was a controversial issue from beginning and will require further amendments by the UK government in order for it to be passed through parliament, prior to the election. The report goes on to add that the most important issue to address was scrapping of the broadband tax. In the meantime, the broadband is expected to be a hot topic in the political arena, even if it continues to win or loose votes in the impending elections.

According to the report, taking in consideration the super fast broadband and other technological advances, more expenses are expected. The only issue rising is, if the taxpayers would continue to fund the costs.
