Town of Swindon: UK’s first Wi-Fi Hub
On December 16th, town of Swindon in the UK emerged as the first town to be known as a Wi-Fi town in the UK, with wireless network connecting all homes and establishments.
The network will be officially launched by Caroline Spelman, Shadow Secretary for communities and local government. By April, the network will provide wireless internet access to around 186,000 citizens in the town.
While providing two hours of free usage for personal uses, heavy business users can have complete access with a mere pay of £7.99 per month and they will be provided unlimited access and an enormous 20Mbps speed. The wireless network will pave a way to better the daily activities of Swindon residents. They can keep track of their energy bills, have touch with medical services and even set up CCTV supported security system at home.
The maker of the project, Rikki Hunt states that this Wi-Fi scheme will be used by Borough council staff to get connected with one another. He also adds that the greatest hurdle left in front of them is to motivate the people to use the new scheme. Mr. Hunt is proprietor of ‘Avidity’, a private firm that works with ‘Aqovia’ and ‘Swindon Borough Council’ to accomplish the task of making the town, a Wi-Fi hub.
While some other projects including ‘Norfolk OpenLink scheme’ failed to accomplish their way up in accomplishing the same target, Mr Hunt says, Swindon has learned from other’s mistakes and has worked hard for triumph. He adds that, others didn’t succeed because they didn’t provide add-ons to move the connection.
The new scheme will provide connection to homes in Highworth during its first phase and the other areas will be brought under converge in 2010.
Rod Bluh, a spokesperson for Swindon Borough Council stated that the new scheme will be a revolutionary step and people are going to enjoy high end services with the introduction of this. Very soon, the town of Swindon will be brought under an umbrella.
