Ofcom Needs Volunteers from Northern Ireland for Next Phase of Broadband Test

0

Ofcom mentioned that, it is the broadband users in Northern Ireland who enjoy higher speeds than those in the rest parts of the UK. But, they added that, there are still some places that lack fair speeds.

For a precise speed survey, Ofcom call for volunteers from the whole of the area to join them.

The survey is as a part of the ‘Ofcom research programme’ in which the broadband speeds in different areas of the UK are tested up to now. About 60 million performance tests are conducted in more than 1600 homes so far.

Denis Wolinski, Ofcom Director for Northern Ireland said that the tests are for finding the exact results about speeds. He added that, many parts of Northern Ireland enjoy good speeds but the fact that many parts get only poor speeds cannot be ignored.

When the results of the last research come, the news was in favour of Northern Ireland. Considering the average in many parts of the UK, Whales and Scotland; Northern Ireland stood tall in receiving higher speeds.

SamKnows, the technological partner in the venture along with Ofcom, mentioned that for the next phase, they need more volunteers.

The ‘White box’ introduced by SamKnows has already found many homes to monitor the speeds customers get from different ISPs. The volunteers those who keep the ‘white box’ at home will be allowed to monitor their own readings.

The speed test programme is mainly intended to test whether the ISPs are true to their offers about speeds. The upcoming test will monitor some of the fastest packages advertised in the market. The next phase results will be published after six months.

Ofcom warns that, those who are heavy downloaders need not apply for being a volunteer. Only average users with download limit below 30GB need to participate in the test.
