Ofcom to Monitor Broadband Speeds

0

Ofcom says that it will examine whether the internet service providers promising super-fast broadband are keeping up the performance to the expectations.

During the last inspection, packages offering 8Mb speeds were found to be lagging with an average of 3.9Mb.

The scrutiny was launched soon after Virgin Media mentioned about commencing a 100Mb deal considered to be the fastest in the UK. Virgin’s former “supersonic” connection claims to travel at twice the speed of BT’s Infinity that offers 40Mb.

Ofcom has tied with technology experts SamKnows to check whether the providers are keeping up their promises. Ofcom has already informed the service providers in the UK about this.

Thousands of British home connections supplied various service providers will be subjected to this analysis. Special equipments called ‘Smart boxes’ will be set in these homes to check the speeds. Connections provided by various ISPs like Virgin, BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Orange and AOL will be monitored.

Chief executive of SamKnows, Alex Salter said that all these measures are to assure that the customers are not paying for a connection speed that they never experience, it’ll also urge the providers to advertise the true speeds.

Surveys by so many agencies state that although Britain enjoys choice in Providers and packages, satisfaction in terms of speed and reliability is coming low as years roll. A true relation between customer and provider can be achieved only if the providers start to advertise the real speed at which the connections run.

All these happen when Virgin is busy with experiments for a 200Mb service. They promise that those who sign in for the new connection offering 100Mb will be able to download contents at much faster rates.
