Ofcom Draws Plans to Make Broadband Cheaper and Faster
Ofcom has set plans to make BT open its £1.5billion fibre optic network for rivals. They mentioned that this will eventually provide the whole nation with super-fast internet at low costs.
If this works, other ISPs like Sky, Carphone Warehouse and Virgin Media Broadband can provide connections with at least 24Mbps speed.
Ofcom will also compel BT to publicize its ducts and telegraph poles so that others can use them to built up their own networks. This step will boost broadband growth and provide six times faster connections to more people.
Although BT will be given liberty to decide the rent on their props being used in competitive areas, Ofcom is planning to regulate the rents in areas where BT has stronghold.
Ed Richards, CEO of Ofcom said that, BT will be allowed to charge a fair amount as rent to recover their investment, but Ofcom will sure monitor over this.
An Ofcom reports stated that, the actions proposed on BT will not cause any loss to BT, it will enable them to securely move with super-fast broadband supply.
At this time, BT Broadband mentioned that, they see nothing to be anxious with Ofcom’s proposals and will move with plans to provide 40% of the UK with super-fast broadband by 2012.
CMA communication’s spokesperson, David Harrington commented that if BT opens its ducts for others, it will bring competitions and thereby, better packages. It will ultimately help the nation to withstand the global economic revolution in digital development.
