Mobile broadband provider to introduce website classifications

One of the Mobile Broadband Provider announced plans to liaise with the British Board of Film Classification in an attempt to introduce the rating system for the websites, same as the movies.

According to the report, movie goers in the UK have established the age suitability of any movie via the rating provided to the film by the British Board of Film Classification. The classification helps to determine if a movie is suitable for kids, whether there should be adults present, or whether the movie is for adults only. Reports claim that this categorisation depends on the content of the film.

Tibboh, the ISP use website filters like Netsweep in order to verify the class to which particular sites belong to.  It is also made us of to block these websites. As per the ratings by the mobile broadband provider, sites like Google, Twitter and Facebook are at “12”, whereas BBC is rated “U”. The classification of “U”, gives it a universal rating, thus making it viable for all ages to watch.

Meanwhile, other blogging sites including WordPress and Blogger is rated ‘15?, to ensure that it is used only by users aged 15 or more. The provider claims that it has already classified about three billion websites. Report goes on to add that it was a vital attempt by the providers to ensure that users were not accessing sites, which are inappropriate for them. An official from Tibboh reports that they believed that search engines were really good. He goes on to add that they, however found varied results at the ‘U’ and ‘P’ level, with sponsored links that are unsuitable.
