Six million unbundled broadband lines across UK

0

According to the latest reports of Ofcom, in the UK there are over six million unbundled broadband connections. The statistics for July 2009 reveals the growth of local loop unbundled (LLU) lines to six million which was 123,000 lines in September 2003.

Ofcom chief executive, Ed Richards said that within 4 years of time, unbundling has grown significantly and has become a competitive force in telecoms industry. This has resulted in the increased adoption of broadband and reduction in its prices.

LLU providers such as Tiscali Broadband, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk Broadband could set up their own equipment in the local telephone exchange by using unbundled lines, thereby sidestepping BT Broadband and reducing the costs. Cheap broadband packages could be offered to the customers by these ISPs.

Ofcom reports over 30 different ISPs who provide LLU broadband services to both business and at homes all over the UK. The research found out that in the end of 2005 consumers paid £23.30 per month for copper wire ADSL broadband services, whereas today they pay only £13.61 for the same service.
