Government to Provide Rural Britain with High Speed Broadband
Considering the ultra pace of life and understanding the necessity, the UK government has got plans to imply law so as to provide every home of the country with fast broadband connection. Time has reached its zenith that a fast connection to web world is a basic need just like water and gas supply.
This suggestion was put forward by council members finding that England’s rural areas are striving to be in par with the technological revolution that booms in cities. By this plan, the whole country will enjoy internet connection. As a start, government is planning to provide a 2 Mbps broadband connection to every home by the end of 2012.
If the government keeps its promise, the UK will be the second nation to make available the entire homes with broadband connection following Finland. But people in the UK will be provided a better speed than those in Finland where they receive a mere 1 Mbps.
Internet has got very good role right from running business, banking, seeking information, downloading music or games and even online shopping. A high speed broadband connection can simplify the tasks of people as well as help them to make better their business, says Mr. Keith Mitchell, spokesperson for Local Government Association. He also added that, a consistent and fast net connection has become essential for the UK households nowadays.
At present, the children growing in cities are getting more information sources than those who are living in urban areas. There is a fear that, in the coming years, there will be considerable gap between those who grow in cities and those who live in rural areas in terms of knowledge and competence. It is to avoid this, high speed broadband connection which is a source of information is to be provided to the villages.
Although it sounds good, government will have to spend a sum of about £30 billion to execute this project, especially for the fibre-optic lines which are necessary for the linking the scattered villages in the country. Still, the authorities are in the decision that the rural Britain should be provided the same privileges that the cities enjoy from quality broadband.
Ofcom’s last month report shows that, Britain is second only to Netherlands in terms of broadband growth rate.
