Government advisers stresses on the importance of broadband

0

According to a research, the UK consumers consider broadband as important as water or electricity. This was put forward at Lord Carter’s Digital Britain review on June 16. Around 73% out of the 2,000 people interviewed had the same opinion of the gaining importance of high-speed internet connection like another function at home.

Following the findings, Anna Bradley, chair of the Communications Consumer Panel said that broadband is quiet essential for some and very soon it will be a necessity for others. Just like gas and electricity, broadband will gain the same prominence in the future.

Internet is used by many for online shopping, banking and other public services which prove the importance of broadband. However, the reports disclosed that people depend upon the internet for communication and accessing information, for entertainment and for streaming TV content.

Regulator Ofcom was advised by The Consumer Panel who carried on the survey that the agreement for 2MB broadband will not be sufficient since many favour universal broadband. Ms Bradley stressed on the fact that at the end of the day it is the service that matters and wants the government and companies to let them what they can actually do and not the speed it offers.

The survey also deals as how the government intends to help the low income groups to be able to access online. Another important issue discussed is regarding the ‘notspots’ where people could not access broadband at present and how they might be helped out.
