BSkyB ads banned over false broadband claims
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) issued ban over some of the recently released press ads of BSkyB for alleging false reports on the broadband speed of it rivals BT and Virgin Media.
It was reported by BSkyB that their rivals slowdown the broadband speed of their users. Complaints were registered from BT and the civic on this issue which the ASA supported. The public claims that most of the slow down occurs during the peak time.
ASA admitted that both BT and Virgin Media practice slowing down of the service at certain exceptional circumstances when certain users excessively download during peak hours. In support of the findings made, ASA reached a conclusion that the ad was to mislead the people. ASA found that BSkyB tried to deconstruct the activities of their rivals through their ads and hence, banned the ads of the company for not following the guidelines of honesty and faithfulness.
