Complex Terminologies of broadband services

Terminologies are mostly used in every field like medicine, accounts, space, information technology, law etc. Likewise there are innumerable terminologies used in connection with broadband. These terminologies are also known as jargons. Some of the important jargons are given below for easy reference.

Server
A server is nothing but a computer or an electronic device, which manages network resources on a network. There are various kinds of servers used for internet connections namely file server, print server, network server and database server. A file server is a PC or system which is dedicated one and used only for storing information in the form of files whereas a print server is also a system or computer, which manages or controls more than one or more printer. If a computer controls network traffic it is known as network server. When a computer is dedicated for processing database queries, it is known as database server.

Contention
Contention is a unique type of network protocol. This protocol is essential for contending the network access. This protocol permits 2 or more nodes to send messages through the network at the same time. The example of the mostly used contention protocol is CSMA or CD and this protocol is used by Ethernet.

Contention Ratio
It is a ratio which describes the highest number of users who share the bandwidth with the help of a broadband connection. This ratio mostly depends on the local exchange of the user and the broadband service provider.

DSL
Digital Subscriber Line is the full form of the acronym DSL. It is the technology mostly used for the transmission of data with the support of standard phone lines. This line provides only digital data transmission through cords by using the local telephone network. This acronym initially meant ‘Digital Subscriber Loop’. But recently this term is adopted as ‘Digital Subscriber Line’.

Firewall
It is nothing but a name of a program specially designed to prohibit unauthorized usage of a private network through internet. It is possible to implement the firewall not only in software but also in hardware. If required the users can use as a combination of both. It becomes essential for the internet users to prevent unauthorized access of a confidential network.
