Some broadband related terms

ADSL
The extended form of ADSL is Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It is just a DSL line where the upload and download speed differs. To make it more clear, the download speed is faster than the upload speed.

Always on

‘Always on’ refers to a connection to the internet that is set to use for a permanent basis and is always ready to use.

Anti virus software
This term is as simple as it sounds. It simply refers to the software that offers enhanced protection to your computer system from viruses attacking them.

Bandwidth

It refers to the pace at which you can send and receive data using the available connection.

Broadband

This merely means the transmission technology that allows multiple signals to share one cable.

Contention radio
Maximum numbers of users who share the bandwidth on the broadband connection between your local exchange and your broadband provider is known as contention ratio.

DSL
Transmitting data over standard phone line is called as DSL. The expanded version of DSL is digital subscriber line.

Firewall
It is this system that provides protection from internal as well as external threats. In simple terms it is the computer system that sits between the internet and a computer or network.

ISP/broadband provider
This is another name provided for internet broadband provider. This is simply the company that provides you with the unlimited broadband service.

MAC address

MAC is the short from of Migration Authorisation Code. This code allows the user to jump from one broadband provider to another. In other terms it allows the user to migrate.

Modem
The modem is a device that results in the connectivity between the computer and the internet. This name is derived from the starting letters of words modulator and demodulator.

Piggy backing
This is a process by which one gains access to a prohibited communication channels by the means of session which another user have already established.

Phishing
This refers to the act of tricking someone or persuading them to do something which they ought not to. Confidential information is given to someone in this manner and is a way of tricking them.

SDSL

This is slightly different from that of DSL, here the download and upload speeds are the same. The extended form of Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line is SDSL.

Spyware
This is a software which is usually used for advertising purpose were the users information is gathered through the users internet connection and the user are not aware of this.

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi refers to the connection of two network devices wirelessly. The full form of Wi-Fi is wireless fidelity.
