BT Opens Its Ducts for Other Internet Service Providers
Ian Livingston, BT Chief Executive mentioned that, the company is glad to allow other providers to use their ducts to run cables. This initiation comes as an intention to make broadband available across the UK.
Livingston continues that the idea existed since last year itself. Already, discussions have moved with Ofcom.
He adds that, if the ducts are open to every provider, it will help considerably to increase the coverage. Since this idea seems fruitful, Livingston says, they expect support form the next government.
To the end of last year itself, Livingston has brought to the notice, the need for financial assistances form the future government for the execution of the plan.
BT’s proposed optical fibre broadband network of 1.5 billion pounds investment is expected to increase the download speeds 10 times. The innovation is likely to exist by the time of next summer Olympics. BT aims to get back the huge investment by having fixed deals with other service providers.
... Read more »Broadband Speed Test in Wiltshire
Wiltshire County Council is planning to conduct a home based broadband speed test to find how fast the connection is running in their province. All the residents of the county will be urged to take part in the test so as to calculate the average.
The council says that, at first the connection speed currently available for the homes will be surveyed in separate local divisions, all the residents would be encouraged to join in this. The results from the minor areas will be joined together to find the average speed enjoyed by the county.
The speed test is to ensure that Wiltshire is also concerned in the Government’s development ventures. The results of the test will decide whether the county is included in the broadband speed revolution happening throughout the country.
Cabinet member for economic development, planning and housing, John Brady mentioned that, a reliable broadband connection with good speed is necessary for the economic growth of a vast province like Wiltshire. He added that, the speed test will make sure that Wiltshire is also enjoying the benefits that other counties enjoy in the sector of technological developments.

Once again, Virgin Broadband gets its position on top for being the provider of the UK’s fastest Broadband connection. The recent speed test results show that Virgin provides the fastest download speed.
The connections taken from Virgin’s fibre optic cable enjoyed average download speeds of 7.651Mbps in January. O2 Broadband / BE Broadband stay second with 5.113Mbps download speed. Virgin offers almost 50% higher speeds than those who hang about second. TalkTalk with 3.628Mbps and BT having 2.982Mbps rank third and fourth respectively.
Virgin ranks second in upload speeds with an average of 0.588Mbps upload speed while O2 and BE Broadband rank first with 0.716Mbps upload speed. In upload speed list too, BT finds third position with an average of 0.487Mbps connection speeds.
With 55% availability in the UK, Virgin’s super-fast broadband from fibre optic cable requires no BT phone line. Virgin offers attractive packages to those who newly try them. For those who purchase their 10Mbps connection online, free service is offered for the first three months, a fair £12.50 will be charged per month subsequently. The connection also offers free weekend calls to the UK landlines.
... Read more »O2 to Benefit from Partnership with BT
At last O2 decided to have touch with BT, once its parent company. In a recent agreement signed on partnership, both decided to work together for growth and prosperity. On the basis of harmony, now onwards, the O2’s networks in Britain will be maintained and upgraded by BT.
O2, at present run by Telefonica- a Spanish telecoms company, was owned by BT until 2001. The new agreement will see O2 enter the market with fixed lines, something it lacked so far.
The new multi-million project is on a five year agreement. With this, BT will be responsible for developing and maintaining O2’s networks which include advanced 3G network also. Now, O2 has some air for improving its quality of service, concentrating more on improving their technology.
The need for the collaboration seems blessing to O2. Last year, there were some complaints about their lack of worth in 3G service. The increased use of iPhones has considerably reduced O2’s 3G performance. Now that BT has given hand, O2 can improve its performance for good.

‘Parents should watch over their children’s activities on internet’, says TalkTalk
TalkTalk, provider of Broadband urges parents of internet using children to keep an eye on them while they use internet and to have a total pre-eminence on internet connection at home.
They advise all the parents to be regular scrutinizers of their children while they are hooked to the internet.
In a survey conducted as a part of the study, TalkTalk discovered that most of the teenagers lie to their parents about what sites they visit.
They also found out that more than half of the students who browse on internet believe they knew more than their parents and they can easily fool their parents. Parents should be wise in dealing with their children, TalkTalk says.
TalkTalk says that just like there are dangers in the real world, there are hazards in the world of internet too. Children have got tendency to move to the unsafe sides of internet usage.
The research emphasizes the need for a better understanding between parents and their children.
